Georgia O'Keeffe was an American modernist painter and draftswoman whose work remained largely independent of major art movements. She is best known for her large-scale flower paintings, in which magnified blossoms expand to fill the entire canvas. Possibly influenced by the cropped perspectives of modern photography, these works move beyond botanical study to become powerful explorations of form, color, and abstraction.

While many critics read the paintings as expressions of femininity or female sexuality, O’Keeffe firmly rejected such interpretations. Throughout her career, she resisted being defined by her gender, insisting that her work be considered on its own terms. As she once wrote, “I have always been very annoyed at being referred to as a ‘woman artist’ rather than an ‘artist.’”

We think she was absolutely right!
