Vincent Willem van Gogh, son of Theo van Gogh and nephew of the renowned painter, grew up surrounded by the paintings and drawings of his famous uncle, but at a fairly young age he realized that his professional future would lie elsewhere. The same was true for several of his friends from the artists’ village of Bussum, where he spent most of his childhood. "We did not always want to concern ourselves with aesthetics," Vincent Willem said. He chose to study mechanical engineering in Delft, where a canvas hung in his student room to which he was particularly attached: a seascape his uncle had painted in the southern French fishing village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer!
