Still Life with Flowers on a Marble Tabletop

Rachel Ruysch was a still-life painter from the Dutch Republic. She specialized in flowers, inventing her own style and achieving international fame in her lifetime. Due to a long and successful career that spanned over six decades, she became the best-documented female painter of the Dutch Golden Age.

This bouquet features more than ten species of flowers and teems with insects. As the blossoms flower at different times, it would be rather difficult to assemble such a bouquet in real life. Ruysch was well aware of this: her extensive study of live and prepared flowers allowed her to paint these vibrant bouquets with stunning precision. During her lifetime, she was one of the most celebrated painters of floral still lifes in Europe.
